“Shabbat of lonelyness”

A moving novel about a group of non recognized Jews according to the halachah, based on true facts.

by Liv-Chayiah Dodino

According to Jewish law, the Halachah, just whom is proved to be born to a Jewish mother or who converts to Judaism is recognized as Jew. That has given quite a big amount of problems to many Jews whose families have been compelled to hide their Jewishness for a while.

Families escaped progrom, Shoah and other persecutions in different countries, some times have survived thanks to changes of identities, false inclusion in Catholic or Protestant church lists, with help of priests’ real human pity or , more often, in exchange of money.

Under Stalin’s regime many Jewish families often hid their Jewishness even to their own children. No brit milah with circumcision for males, no Jewish education at all to children.

During Shoah and Stalinist persecutions a few Jews from Poland, Lithuania and Russia escaped massacres thanks to false documents, mostly Swedish and Finnish, and French, Italian and Irish as well. After then, nor they or their children either were able to find well known people or proofs to witness a Bet Din their Jewishness. That has given birth to a special kind of Jews, the ones in the book is told about as “the diaspora of the free Jews"…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (more)
